Surfing

All around the coast

Surfers have been making the pilgrimage around Taranaki’s coast for generations, colonising the endless point breaks as they ventured further round.

Legendary waves like Stent Road, the Kumara Patch and the aptly named Rocky Point are supplemented by the likes of Arawhata Road, Mangahume, Back Beach and Fitzroy Beach to offer a wave for almost any wind and swell direction.

Of course, as you drive around Surf Highway 45 you’ll pass other spots that you won’t find in any guidebook – the best approach is to load the car with boards and friends and go exploring, just as the sport’s forefathers did. Chances are you’ll discover the perfect wave, and more of Taranaki.
